MUSIC PAVILION FOR THE COMTESSE DE PROVENCE AT VERSAILLES
Built in 1784 for the countess of Provence, sister-in-law of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, by Jean-François Chalgrin(1739-1811, grand prix de Rome d'architecture, The first architect of Mr. , the king's brother, this neo-classic house is directly inspired by the villa Rotonda of Palladio. It had to showcase the domaine du Grand Montreuil, haven of peace of the countess of Provence, as could be the Hamlet of the queen at Trianon, Bellevue for Mesdames the daughters of Louis XV, The Petit-Montreuil (Madame Elisabeth, sister of Louis XV
It is in an intimate relationship of rivalry and incompatibility of temper with his sister-in-law Marie-Antoinette, that the countess of Provence came to rest three kilometres of the court
If it is kept track of dinners with the king, the queen, the comte de Provence and the comte d'artois, especially to eat a soup prepared by the countess of Provence, based birds that she caught herself at the net in its area of Montreuil ; Montreuil was above all a haven of intimate devoted to nature and rural pleasures
Real rarity architectural, described as the wonder of the Grand-Montreuil, the countess of Provence wished to be sober and of great refinement, she came to play and practise the harpsichord and the guitar
The architecture of the building is inspired by an ancient temple by his plan centered around the rotunda. It was around 1830 that the jeweler Mellerio made to attach the two side wings by the architect Jean-Jacques-Marie Huvé(1783-1852)that give it its current pace
The south façade on avenue side of Paris, this looks very neoclassical by the rigor of its elemental forms pure. The entrance to the vestibule in the front body is made by a high arch that is curved framed by two columns in a rectangular volume stressed thin partition walls surmounted with a triangular pediment decorated with the figure M Mrs. Seven steps of white marble lead up to this vestibule with columns, adorned with niches and marble décor in trompe l'oeil
Windows, three bays to each side, and a span to pan cut with the front body have a bending perfect underlined by a discreet mouluration. The window sills are supported by consoles
The façade on the garden side has an identical provision, if this is not the central body to the three sections opens with a door central window on the front porch with balusters in white marble with double flight of steps descending to the garden
The attic is discreetly integrated into the side wings with openings coming to catch up the height of the central body
We find the directory of the neoclassical in the bosses of the corners of the building as well as the modillions in the pediment and the cornice
Past the vestibule, we enter the music room in the shape of a rotunda, under dome overhead lighting eight metres high. The decor in trompe l'oeil reproduces the perspective of the flower gardens of the domain of Montreuil, thus we find carnations from Spain, balls of snow, hollyhocks, jacinthes, honeysuckle, phlox, bluebells, once grown by the comtesse de Provence, punctuated with a monumental architecture feint of ionic columns forming a circular temple surrounded by a balustrade, bearing a cupola of arcades decorated with balusters and draperies, punctuated numbers M for Mrs. and JL for Josephine-Louise. The floor is paved with white and black marble
We find the decorative vocabulary of neoclassical, corniche à console, acanthus leaves applied, ova and rays of the heart
The access doors to staircases and other parts are camouflaged without amounts and blend in with the scenery until it becomes invisible, the refinement is such that when the doors are open, the visible parts are also painted
Continuing the axis of movement to the garden, we enter into a living room octagonal, decorated with stucco and carved woodwork of an outstanding refinement, by means of a double curved door hidden in the decor
Garlands of flowers are particularly fine, hung by ribbons are punctuated with medallions supported by cupids in bas-relief the figure M Mrs
We find here again the directory neoclassical, cornice on consoles applied acanthus leaves, frieze of oves and darts, rosace, palmettes ; on the ground, a floor Versailles oak. These woodwork evoke with their repertoire, those of the hôtel de Tessé in 1768, conserved at the Metropolitan Museum of New York or those of the hotel Le Tellier, 13 rue Royale, Paris, preserved in the museum of the Philadelphia Museum of Art
The fireplace in the " white marble statuary, is decorated with capitals with leaf cross on the heads, of pearls on the frieze, the consoles are curved with mouldings on baluster and piastres in the molding in the middle "
Around these two main parts, the movement is done by a succession of double doors, in a wing towards a small living room, the rich decorations in stucco Xix, a dining room, a spacious kitchen fitted in 1960 with cupboards woodwork, and tiles from Delft in the wall, a fireplace with insert. A cabinet decorated with wood paneling half-circular
In the other wing are, a small boudoir, formerly the house of the countess of Provence, a small office, a large living room facing south, a large bedroom with its ensuite bathroom
The spandrels of the rotunda camouflage two elegant curved staircases to the beautiful railing in wrought iron, bases and capitals gilded mercury, to access the floor. In a wing, a charming boudoir oval overhead lighting, adorned with woodwork, has also retained its fireplace " marble Riffs of Aleppo, adorned with rosettes on the heads " of which the cornice with modillions is finely carved. We also noticed the skirting boards painted marble Breccia of Aleppo, of the beautiful elements of woodwork and frames and sprung, a small office adjacent and a toilet
two beautiful rooms, including one with fireplace, both have a bathroom
In the other wing, we find the same provision, "a room of games" oval, to overhead lighting, decorated with a beautiful fireplace. Two rooms are currently in use, self-contained accommodation
A cellar paved are spread over the entire surface of the house, which the access is independent
It is to be noted that the overhead lighting, now here in the rotunda and two boudoirs of the floor is an innovation of the first order in architecture at the end of the Eighteenth century, furthermore, we find him in the Rambouillet dairy to Marie-Antoinette by Jacques-Jean Thévenin in 1785, in the art dealer Jean-Baptiste Lebrun, husband of Elizabeth Louis Vigée, known as Mme Vigée-Lebrun, painter, portraitist of Marie-Antoinette, or even the Louvre, in the reflection development of the future Large Gallery conducted by Hubert Robert from 1784 at the request of Louis XVI. This innovation is very much related to a share, the craze for the antique architecture and on the other hand, the study of the lighting of works of art and especially in painting, the overhead lighting, limiting glare on shiny surfaces, a varnish for example
