WONDERFUL ROMANESQUE ABBEY AND ITS NEO-CLASSICAL CHATEAU - Great history of humanity - On one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela - Former place of preservation of holy relics - Endangered heritage - 12th-century Romanesque abbey church - Elegant early 19th-century neo-classical chateau - Superb 50-hectare estate in a single freehold block - River - Miraculous spring - Listed and classified Historic Monument - Saintes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
Founded in 1137, this Cistercian abbey situated along one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela preserves a rare 12th-century abbey chapel distinguished by its magnificent Romano-Byzantine façade. Set within an exceptionally rare environmental haven of 50 uninterrupted and unoccupied hectares crossed by a river and the remains of a Cistercian hydraulic system, the estate also includes a highly elegant early 19th-century neo-classical chateau, vast and lofty 19th-century agricultural buildings of exceptional architectural quality, and the remains of a medieval mill. The entire ensemble now requires urgent restoration.Beyond the sober semi-circular entrance gates, at the end of an avenue lined with majestic centuries-old plane trees, rises the elegant neo-classical chateau built around 1840. It overlooks a U-shaped courtyard enclosed by stone balustrades, framed on one side by a sumptuous 19th-century agricultural hall of monumental architecture and on the other by the splendid 12th-century Romanesque abbey chapel. The abbey chapel follows a simple basilican plan, shortened in depth as evidenced by the truncated dome above the choir. Its particularly harmonious and beautiful façade is composed of three tiers of arcades ornamented with dog-tooth decoration beneath a large pediment engraved with the monogram IHS, installed by the Jesuits who administered the abbey estate during the 17th and 18th centuries.
