Exclusive Listing – MAGNIFICENT 17TH-CENTURY CHÂTEAU ATTRIBUTED TO FRANÇOIS MANSART – Partially restored estate, tastefully renovated with substantial investment (€6 million spent over 5 years) – Superb gardens and woodland across 16 hectares – Outstanding architectural features – Listed Historic Monument – New equestrian facilities – 170 km from Paris – Troyes, Champagne.
Set along the axis of a majestic and spectacular 18th-century entrance gate from the school of Jean Lamour, who also created the gates of Place Stanislas in Nancy, the château stands at the end of a magnificent 200-metre-long avenue. It is framed by two perfectly restored classical entrance pavilions, opening onto the gatehouse, and faces two lavishly appointed stable buildings. The château sits within a park of century-old trees, structured around a moat, landscaped terraces, sweeping vistas and a reflecting pool. The grounds have recently been redesigned and replanted with mature, high-quality specimens.
Restored since 2021 to the highest standards, using the finest materials and skilled craftsmen, by a passionate art and culture enthusiast, this estate has benefited from €6 million in restoration works. These include the entrance gate, the moat, both entrance pavilions, the structural works to the gatehouse, and the two stable buildings, one restored and the other newly built. A new outdoor arena and indoor riding arena have also been provided. The park has undergone extensive landscaping, including 15 km of irrigation piping and the planting of mature trees. The château itself remains to be restored, as does the hydroelectric power station.
The château features exceptionally elegant, symmetrical 17th-century classical architecture. Built around 1630 and attributed to François Mansart, it has a slightly projecting central pavilion beneath characteristic Mansart-style mansard roofs, with a grand entrance perron centred on each façade. The through-layout of the rooms can be appreciated through the transparency of this particularly airy and elegant architectural design.
Inside, beyond the grand entrance perron, the double-aspect entrance hall, flooded with natural light and connecting the two grand entrance steps, reveals a magnificent and highly impressive 17th-century staircase, worthy of the finest examples of French architecture of the period. The carved stone balustrade features interlacing motifs, oak leaves and laurel leaves, symbols of power and military glory, as well as medallions beneath marquess crowns bearing the initials of the Picot de Moras de Dampierre family, who owned the estate until 2021. Following the complete loss of the historic interior decoration during the 20th century, the remainder of the château has recently undergone a thorough and meticulous strip-out. The entire château requires restoration.
