Descriptif du bien

PAVILLON D’ARTOIS AT Vaux-sur-Seine, traditionally attributed to the Comte d’Artois, brother of Louis XVI - 4 hectares on the banks of the Seine River, landing stages on the river, private island, outbuildings.

Although no historical document formally links this residence to the Comte d’Artois, several architectural and decorative details suggest the influence of François-Joseph Bélanger, notably architect of the Pavillon de Bagatelle in the Bois de Boulogne for the Comte d’Artois, of whom he was First Architect. Built on a U-shaped plan, the cour d’honneur opens onto a rotunda with Greek-inspired columns and Doric capitals characteristic of the 1780s–1790s. This rotunda retains a complete ensemble of French windows with their original mercury-glass mirrors. To the left rises a magnificent unsupported spiral staircase, while to the right an oval dining room lit from above represents a remarkably avant-garde architectural conception for the late 18th century. On the garden side, an enfilade of reception rooms displays superb wood panelling, including a library adorned with carved floral basket and putti motifs of extraordinary quality and depth of carving. A griotte marble fireplace with gilt bronzes attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire or Claude Galle demonstrates remarkable chasing work. The grand salon is decorated with neo-classical terracotta ornament. The right wing, notably the oval dining room, opens onto a courtyard centred on a fountain, from which access is gained to the private theatre. The former French formal garden that once occupied this space has now disappeared. Within the outbuildings survives an exceptional theatre seating one hundred spectators, adorned with a superb Charles X period stage in precious wood marquetry. A delightful boudoir decorated with panoramic wallpapers depicting the American War of Independence opens onto a terrace overlooking the garden. A bathroom with a sunken bathtub fitted with a bronze swan-neck tap reflects the taste of 1920s Art Deco. Upstairs, a landing lit from above retains finely inlaid furniture and a rotunda study. Three beautiful 18th-century alcove bedrooms survive with panelling, marble fireplaces and trumeaux, together with a magnificent bathroom and linen room. On this same level, cool rooms with cabochon floors, probably intended as summer dining rooms, open directly onto the garden level. Access to the lower garden floor from the courtyard is provided by a spiral staircase of exceptionally sophisticated stereotomy and construction, once again evocative of the work of François-Joseph Bélanger. This level also contains a jacuzzi, climate-controlled wine cellar and gymnasium. The wings accommodate numerous additional rooms, bedrooms, a screening room, library, pantry and a magnificent kitchen entirely renewed in 2000 in solid oak and polished granite. The left wing opens onto a small courtyard known as the Cour Saint-Anne, separating the pavilion from the service buildings, which include two very comfortable staff apartments, garages, laundry facilities and boiler rooms. The eastern section of the estate contains extensive and beautiful kitchen gardens and orchards, with a heated greenhouse and substantial outbuildings dedicated to maintaining this part of the grounds. The potager includes an exceptional collection of mature magnolias. Elsewhere, shaded pathways wind through the romantic park, punctuated by a major artificial rock grotto and artificial stream. Numerous remarkable trees enrich the landscape: avenues of sycamore maples, sequoias, mature magnolias, rows of towering poplars and cypresses. Along the Seine, an alignment of immense poplars animates the riverbank, while on the private island a line of cypresses creates a striking perspective from the pontoon. The romantic park descends gently towards the Seine River and includes a large rock grotto and artificial river. Additional amenities comprise a tennis court, an independent EDF electrical transformer with backup generator, computer server and oil-fired heating system. On the riverbank:
— A superb swimming pool overlooking the Seine with stone coping
— Pool house with sauna
— Pergola
— Extensive kitchen garden and orchard
— Heated greenhouse
— Large gardener’s house
The private island, available as an optional acquisition, includes two landing stages, a private beach, a large ornamental basin and a bungalow inspired by the style of Frank Lloyd Wright.
