Descriptif du bien
MUSIC PAVILION OF THE COMTESSE DE PROVENCE AT Versailles - Built in 1784 for the Comtesse de Provence, sister-in-law of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, by Jean-François-Thérèse Chalgrin, winner of the Prix de Rome for architecture and First Architect to Monsieur, the King’s brother, this neo-classical pavilion was directly inspired by Palladio’s Villa Rotonda.
It formed the jewel of the Grand Montreuil estate, a peaceful retreat for the Comtesse de Provence, much as the Queen’s Hamlet at Trianon was for Marie Antoinette, Bellevue for the daughters of Louis XV, and Le Petit-Montreuil for Madame Élisabeth, sister of Louis XVI. It was within this intimate refuge, shaped by rivalry and incompatibility of temperament with her sister-in-law Marie Antoinette, that the Comtesse de Provence came to find repose just three kilometres from the royal court.
