Descriptif du bien
LIMOUSIN CHARENTE - Sale of an otherworldly fortress, partially in ruins, dating from the 15th, 16th and 19th centuries on 12th-century foundations, dominating a valley within a preserved natural setting on the site of a meteorite impact dating from the end of the Triassic period, Charente, Limousin.
This remarkable site, whose stones still bear witness to the astrobleme created by a meteorite impact approximately 200 million years ago, also attests to ancient occupation. A Roman road once passed nearby, extensive Roman baths have been discovered in the vicinity, and numerous Gallo-Roman artefacts have been unearthed here. A noble fiefdom is recorded from the 12th century onwards, although the surviving buildings are of later date. Built on a rectangular plan enclosed by outbuilding wings, the entrance to the inner courtyard is through a gate tower that appears to date from the late 15th century, opening onto the courtyard opposite the 16th–17th century residential range. This two-storey tower is lit by elegant moulded windows on the first floor, while its hipped roof structure still survives intact. Traces of a removable bridge system remain visible within the masonry.
